This is an example of a short pre-test that you can hand out to students before you start an introduction section. Ask students to put a circle around correct answers.

Make your own pre-test about the topics you want students to learn during your introduction.  (See sample pre-test for middle school.)

After your introduction, ask students to put a star on the correct answer and collect them.  It will help you and the teacher assess the students' level of understanding and it will help them to remember information you presented.

Sample Pre-test:

1.  Of the following examples, which are primary sources:

  • Photograph
  • Published biography that includes quotes from letters and diaries
  • Civil War soldier's diary
  • 2011 newspaper article about the start of the Civil War

2.  Which of the following are true?

  • Book titles try to indicate the topic of the book
  • Titles of archival collections include the creator/author rather than the topic
  • Most historic photographs are already online
